Lumpy Waters - ACA L4
Join us at Democrat Point on Long Island — a great venue with lots of options — where we'll hit some rough water and experience the fun of paddling in the surf zone.
This class introduces paddlers to rough water skills and the joys of moving water. Conditions vary, but we may work on safe beach launching and landing, reading moving water, control in current, stern rudder use in current and surf, edging and bracing when broached, surfing, tide-race play, and group management in the surf zone.
Self and assisted rescue practice in moving water is pretty much guaranteed. The day's activities will be adjusted to both the participants and the conditions.
This is an ACA Level 4 skills class geared toward paddlers with solid Level 3 skills looking to move into a more textured sea environment. Students should come with bracing skills, be working toward a roll, and be comfortable with rescues and recoveries in flat water.
Helmets are required. If you don't have one, we can provide one — just let us know. (Don't stress about the helmet; it's mainly there to protect us from each other as we play in moving water!).
