ACA Level 1 – Intro to Kayaking
Learn the basic kayaking strokes, maneuvers, and rescue techniques to give you a strong foundation as a paddler on flat water.
Almost anyone can kayak, but the secret to becoming a strong, efficient paddler who doesn’t tire easily is proper form – and this full-day class provides a great introduction.
We’ll start with a land-based discussion of paddling equipment, weather and water conditions, and safety; then we’ll get on the water in the protected embayments of Brooklyn Bridge Park to learn key strokes and maneuvers such as forward and reverse paddling, stopping, and sweep (turning) strokes. We’ll also work on self-rescue, assisted rescue, and towing techniques.
Prerequisites: Just a good attitude and reasonable comfort in the water – no previous paddling experience or training needed.

All paddlers are required to wear a life vest when on the water — no exceptions—and will need to follow the directions of our Instructor and staff.
