Bouncy Currents

Test your mettle out in New York Harbor, where strong currents give the water some bounce – and give us lots of chances to practice our recovery and rescue skills!

Most of our group paddles are planned to minimize risk, and we typically practice rescues in calm water. But capsizes are much more likely when the water starts moving — and that's also when we have the most fun, learn the most, and get the best environmental feedback.

Just off Castle Williams on the northwest shore of Governors Island is a dynamic zone where strong currents flow over a shallow area, mostly clear of commercial traffic. Many of us have paddled there at different points in the tide cycle and thought: this could be interesting.

Conditions vary, but with a new moon boosting the ebbing current we should have a solid shot at some lively water. We've run this class many times and always had a great time.

If you're looking to move your paddling into a more textured sea environment, this class could be for you. Solid bracing skills and comfort with flat-water rescues are required. Please reach out with any questions about whether this class is right for you. Instructor approval required.

Helmets are required — we can provide one if needed, just let us know. (Don't stress; it's there to protect us from each other as we play in chaotic water!)

Prerequisites: L3 skills. Solid bracing skills, comfort with rescues and recoveries, plus instructor approval.
